Peter Obi Calls on Tinubu to Step Aside Ahead of 2027 Election
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider stepping aside before the 2027 general election, arguing that Nigeria requires renewed leadership to effectively tackle the country’s economic and security challenges.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi expressed concern over the nation’s current direction, stating that stronger leadership is needed to address the growing hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.
Obi Questions Tinubu’s Capacity to Lead
During the interview, Obi compared President Tinubu’s current leadership with his tenure as governor of Lagos State.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the circumstances have changed significantly, and he believes the president no longer possesses the level of energy required to handle the demands of leading Africa’s most populous nation.
Obi suggested that Tinubu should consider retiring from active politics and allow a new generation of leadership to take responsibility for moving the country forward.
He maintained that effective governance requires both vision and the physical capacity to respond to complex national challenges.
Call for Fresh Leadership in Nigeria
Obi argued that Nigeria is facing serious economic and social difficulties that demand urgent attention.
He said the country needs leadership capable of implementing practical solutions that improve citizens’ welfare, strengthen institutions and restore public confidence.
According to him, the focus should shift away from political maneuvering and toward solving issues affecting everyday Nigerians.
He stressed that leadership should be measured by its ability to deliver meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
Concerns Over Poverty, Economy and Security
The former presidential candidate highlighted poverty, unemployment, food insecurity and insecurity as some of the country’s most pressing concerns.
He warned that millions of Nigerians continue to face increasing economic hardship and argued that stronger policy implementation is necessary to reverse current trends.
Obi emphasized the importance of investing in productive sectors of the economy, improving education, creating employment opportunities and strengthening security across the country.
He maintained that addressing these issues requires deliberate planning and effective governance.
Obi Reacts to Trump’s Comments on Tinubu
Reacting to recent comments by former United States President Donald Trump, who reportedly commended President Tinubu’s efforts in addressing insecurity, Obi acknowledged the recognition but insisted that much more remains to be done.
He said any positive assessment should not distract from the reality of the security and economic challenges confronting Nigerians.
According to Obi, while government efforts should be acknowledged where appropriate, the priority must remain achieving measurable improvements in public safety and national development.
Focus on National Challenges Ahead of 2027
As political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election continue, Obi urged Nigerians to focus on the country’s most urgent challenges rather than partisan politics.
